Geocache Description:

1st in a series of geocaches along the Robert Munford Trail

This is a very seldom used trail located on Buggs Island Lake. I hike bike or paddle this trail once a month for exercise and thought it would be a good challenging trail to line with geocaches.

This trail will lead you along the shoreline of John. H. Kerr Resivor, through natural areas that only 200 years ago were Robert Munfords home. He was one of the most important citizens of early Mecklenburg County. You will see the cemetery where he is buried.

Humans have inhabited this area for thousands of years. Try to find clues of the changes that have taken place. Think about what the area might have looked like as the home of red wolves,as the home of Occonneechee Indians,as a tobacco plantation,as a background to the Revolutionary War,and now... What do you think it was like to have lived here?

The trail is 7 miles long, walking its entire length will take about seven hours. (I've done it in 4 1/2)You may make a shorter 2 mile round trip to the cemetery from the north trail head. This will take about two hours.

There are some places along the trail that may be submerged during high water or blocked by deadfall trees. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

Note that the trail ends at the south Trail head located off State route 705,Taylors Ferry Road. You may want to arrange a pick up at that location. Camping is not permitted on the trail.

Interpetive signs along the trail will reveal many secrets at the unique history of this area. Just Follow the white Trail Blazes and enjoy you hike!!!

More caches will follow after hunting season is over. The entire trail will be lined by late Spring
