Knowles was founded by Ben L. Knowles in 1903 as the second community in Lea County. It was once a thriving community in Lea County and boasted the largest population for a number of years. At the peak of it growth between 1909-1912, the population was estimated at 500. If you look SW of this intersection you can see the ruins on several of the buildings that once stood here, including the vault from the Knowles bank.
Today, there is several houses, a volunteer fire department, church and community center that still thrives on what is left.
