The Dwarf Palmetto Sabal minor is the only palm native to the Hill Country. This is a rare sight at this elevation. These native palms prefer moist locations, but once established are fairly drought tolerant. This specimen and the one nearby have been growing here about ten years. There was a small colony until the ROW was mowed. A shame to lose these uncommon plants. Its BB-sized fruits are edible and taste like dates.
Palmetto State Park is named for this plant.
• Park in the ROW for easy access to the cache, but - PLEASE! PAY ATTENTION TO WHERE YOU HAVE PARKED - GRASS FIRES ARE EASILY STARTED BY HOT VEHICLES.
•If you start at the end of Turkey Knob and work your way back, parking is easier on the passenger side for most caches. My caches Turkey Knob, Vanishing Hill Country, Poor Old Walnut, die Texas Windmuhle, 711 Ranch Remnants, Dwarf Palmetto, and Sotol Colony are best accessed by parking on the outbound passenger side. Park on the inbound right for Dantziger Monument, Champee Springs, and Ingenhuett Ranch Remnants.
• Look where you step and when you reach - A good place for a container is also a good place for a critter and/or a thorny plant.
This cache is a revived stage of the late Vanishing Hill Country Quest. This was a good opportunity to bring well-verified coordinates back to life and provide new caches to find in Kendall County. Most of these containers are the originals from 2006, in case you wondered why I used these worn containers.
There is not much extraneous traffic in this area, so these Ranger Creek caches are pretty easy to find so you don't too look suspicious to the residents.
