One of a series of caches placed in and around the small village of Bubbenhall, initially set to coincide with Coming of Age 4 event.
The village dates back to pre-Domesday Book, when it was known as Bubbenhalle. Later, in Anglo-Saxon times, it became Bubbenhull, with the most likely meaning being ‘hilll of a man called Bubba’. It is also reported that in stories told to local children, the name meant ‘bubbling hole’, linked to the number of natural springs in the village.
Villagers are proud of their recently improved village green, including the restored village spring. The original spring or ‘spout’, as it was known, had started to dry up and the water became undrinkable. A major project was embarked upon, to reinstate the spring, and to restore the village green area. This was completed in 2009, and in addition to the new water fountain, a “lych gate” style bus shelter was constructed from English oak and reclaimed tiles. The nearby village pit or pond was also restored.
The parish church of St Giles dates back to the 12th /13th centuries, with additions made in the 14th century. It is dedicated to Giles, who was born into a wealthy family in Greece but who gave all his money to the poor. He then lived as a hermit in a cave in France. He is patron saint of beggars, cripples & lepers.
There are several other interesting buildings in the village, including two public houses, the Three Horse Shoes and the Malt Shovel, which both date back to the early 19th century, at least in part. Other notable buildings from that period are the Old School and the Reading Room.
This cache is a small camouflaged tube containing a log-sheet. Please bring your own writing implement.
Do not attempt to park next to this cache. There are several places in the village, including a daytime car-park at the village hall - please be considerate to residents. Also, note that the A445 (between this cache and Bubbenhall – Yelllow Top) is a busy road, with fast moving traffic. There is a reasonable footpath for most of this section, but please take care.
