History fact: The Ten Footer
Ten footers were small, backyard shoemaker's workshops common in the 1800s. The name was derived from the fact that the structure was usually ten feet by ten feet. As the shoe industry grew, individual shoemakers working in these ten footers were contracted to make a specific part of the shoe rather than the whole shoe. The parts were then assembled in the factories. Over time, production of the parts also moved to the factories and shoe manufacturing became a large scale industry.
