Geocache Description:

Park near the Newman Trail head which is behind St. John UCC in Valmeyer IL. Trail criss crosses the creek bed a few times so it is recommended to not attempt right after a rainy period.

Founded in 1909 and home to the Valmeyer Pirates, it is home to some of the most beautiful views in the area. After the flood of 1993, Valmeyer moved from the river bottom to the top of the bluffs that overlook it's original location. Salt Lick Reserve is a network of multiple trails that will take a hiker from the top of the bluff all the way to the bottoms.

~Tale of Mudbeard the River Pirate~

In the days that pirates roamed the seven seas, one grew tired of the competition. It was hard to make a name for one's self with the likes of Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Jean Lafitte. So Mudbeard decided to say goodbye to the warm Caribbean waters as he and his trusted men headed up the delta of the Mississippi River. They became the scourge of the Great Muddy as they would raid settlers that called the land bordering the river home, stealing their trinkets. It is said that Mudbeard would hide his treasures along the bluffs up and down the river, so wherever he was, he was never far from his treasures.
