Shire Town: Prince Frederick (ver. 2.0) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

redlights: As of 9:30 this morning, this cache is no longer available. It has been out there for a good couple of years. Thanks to those who visited.
The final container was at the park n ride off of Old Fairgrounds Rd in Prince Frederick. It was located in the back of one of the benches. Some finders said it was hard to get a hand on it, but nonetheless I thought it was an interesting twist on the "County Seat" idea.

Geocache Description:

This is an offset cache in the heart of Prince Frederick, MD. The difficulty rating is based on the stealth required to access the final container.

In parts of New England, they are known as a “shire town.” Most of us know them as “county seats.” In the United States, counties administer state or provincial law at the local level as part of the decentralization of state authority. So a county is an administrative division of a state which has no sovereign jurisdiction of its own. The county seat is an administrative center for that county.

In Calvert County, Maryland , Robert Brooke established the first county seat in 1652, on the north side of Battle Creek, in an area known as Battle Town and then Calvert Town. In 1772 a new county seat was chosen at a site known as Williams Old Field. The name was later changed to Prince Frederick, in honor of King George I’s son. In July of 1814, the British troops burned the County Court House and many other buildings before being driven out by the members of the county militia. Another great fire occurred in March 1882, resulting from natural causes. The Court House, Calvert Journal offices, a hotel and the Methodist church were some of the buildings that were burned. During this fire Somerwell Sollers, the Clerk of the Court, was able to save some of the official records by moving them to the Episcopal Church. But those records were also lost when that church burned to the ground the following July.

OffSet:
There is a statue that stands at the posted coordinates which honors the fallen sons of the "War to end all wars." At the base on the front of the memorial is a date. Use the last three digits of that date to calculate your new location according to the following equation:

For the North: SUBTRACT 29 from the last three digits of the date.
For the West: SUBTRACT 52 from the last three digits on the date.

Also while in the area why not try to locate:
Benchmark K 133.
It is only about 60 feet behind you as you face the courthouse.
