Geocache Description:

This is number two in a series of four. Columbus has 4 dams in the county located on the Chattahoochee River. Each dam has its own history as well as sights and other local history in the surrounding area.

The City Mills Dam was built by the City Mills Company in 1907. The dam crosses the river at 18th Street in the city of Columbus. This is the site of the oldest manufacturing operation on the Chattahoochee River. On April 3, 1828, the State of Georgia through Governor George R. Gilmer, issued a grant to Seaborn Jones for Lot No. 1 (51/2 acres) in the reserve at the Coweta Fall. Seaborn Jones built a grist mill in 1828, known as Jones Mill and began the manufacture of water-ground corn meal. Milling operations of similar type have continued on this site ever since.
br /> The original dam across the river at this point was of wooden construction. In 1906-1907 the present stone dam was built by City Mills Co. The mill (now vacant) operated under the name of City Mills for more than a century. This dam supplied power for the operation of the mill.
This dam will be breached as part of Columbus’s $23 million dollar “White Water Rafting Project”.
The mill is vacant now and falling into decay. It offers “Ghost Signs” for those who waymark as well as a Georgia historical marker. The Riverwalk runs beside the mill offering a grand view of the dam and old mill.

NEW INFORMATION: The dam has been breached to create a rapid flow and some white water down river. The cache container was moved about 6 feet from the cords.< The cache is a bison tube disguised by another container. You DO NOT have to go down the bank to the river. Bring your own pen. A 2 dollar bill is included for the First To Find. Congrats to the Cripple Blind Squirrel on his First To Find.
