This easy multi-cache is part of a series that takes you on a walk through the bush at Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains. Glenbrook is a small "village" at the start of the Blue Mountains and is a lovely place for a walk and a coffee. It is meant for locals and tourists and starts at the train station so that for those without private transport the trail starts as soon as you arrive at Glenbrook.
A Thank You to wackydo and eaviate for creating the Glenbrook Ramble series of caches.
If doing the Glenbrook Ramble series, Glenbrook Ramble #17 is on the way to the final waypoints of this cache. Walk back towards Glenbrook Ramble #14 and follow the track at the back of the houses to get to the underpass to safely cross the highway to find the cache. On that path you will find Glenbrook Ramble #16.
At the listed co-ordinates you will find a plaque to commemorate a RAAF plane crash that occurred in WWII. The crashed plane landed on this spot. The mission was a medical evacuation from Parkes to Mascot airfield. All on board were killed in the crash. The plaque is now surrounded by suburbia.
A newspaper article in the Canberra Times says "A poignant feature of the tragedy was that the plane was bringing a sick airman from Parkes. A medical officer was on board and giving attention to the sick airman when the crash occurred. Three employees of the Hotel Lapstone, who were swimming in a dam 3 miles from the hotel, first noticed the plane flying low and it appeared to be losing height. Suddenly there was a roar from the engines as if the pilot was endeavouring to regain height, but the machine dived into the ground between two houses, bursting into flames.......(The RAAF Officer's Mess was the original Lapstone Hotel until 1952.) The wreckage of the plane came to rest in the backyard of the residence of the Glenbrook stationmaster.....The machine was smashed to matchwood, and one engine was found 150 yards from the machine, the fuselage of which had caught fire. One eyewitness stated that he saw smoke issuing from the aircraft while it was in flight."
To find the final waypoints answer the following questions...
1. What date in January did the plane crash? = A
2. What year did the plane crash? 194? = B
3. How many men died in the plane crash? = C
4. What is the street number of the house where the plane crashed? =D
Then the final waypoints will be:
33 (73-A) (907+B)
150 (33+C) (172-D)
