Tourbes : Eglise Saint-Saturnin


Cet édifice gothique de la fin du XIIIème siècle qui reçut le nom du St Patron de Tourbes fut construit sur l'ancien cimetière après le rachat du village et de Pézenas par St Louis aux enfants du seigneur Raymond de Salvignac.
La taille imposante de l'église au sein d'un petit village symbolise la volonté de Louis IX d'imposer son autorité sur ce territoire nouvellement acquis.
L'architecture est caractéristique du gothique méridional avec une structure d'inspiration romane très répandue à cette époque dans le sud de la France. L'entrée primitive se situait sur le côté nord alors que la porte actuelle date du XIXème siècle. L'aspect extérieur laisse supposer que la construction est inachevée notamment par la présence sur la façade ouest d'un début de travée supplémentaire.
En 1905, lors de la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat, la municipalité devient propriétaire du bâtiment et y fait inscrire la devise de la République. De part et d'autre de l'entrée on remarque 2 croix de mission du XIXème siècle.
A l'intérieur, la nef est composée de 3 travées voûtées d'ogives et de 2 chapelles latérales renfermant des reliques et des monstrances. Les ouvertures à meneaux dans le choeur et la nef sont ornées de magnifiques vitraux qui illuminent l'autel en marbre de Caune du XVIIème siècle (derrière l'autel actuel) qui proviendrait d'une église de Béziers.

This Gothic building dating from the end of the XIIIème cen and named after the patron saint of Tourbes was constructed on the old cemetery after St Louis bought the village and Pezenas from the children of Lord Raymond de Salvignac.
The size of the church in such a small village symbolises the determination St Louis to impose his authority on the newly won territory.
This architectural style is characteristic of Southern Gothic. The original entrance was located on the north sides whereas the present door dates from the IXIth cen. Viewed from without it seems unfinished, notably on the west facade where one can see the beginnning of extra span.
In 1905, during the seperation of church and state, the town council became owner of the church  and the republican motto is inscribed on the church. On both side of the entrance, we see two fine quality XIXth cen mission crosses. Inside the nave consists of three rib-vaulted bays and two side chapels. The mullioned openings in the choir and the nave are embellished with magnificent stained glass
