Geocache Description:

In Guilford, plenty of parking on Route 80, coordinates provided. Please be cautious while crossing Rt 80! A little over a mile round trip with fairly level terrain throughout. Trail is well-marked and easy to follow.***Congrats to Turtle for FTF!***

Welcome to the Menunkatuck Trail, a new Blue-Blazed Hiking Trail that stretches from the junction of the Mattabesett Trail in north Guilford south to Nut Plains Woods. The Menunkatuck Trail is a part of the New England Trail (NET), the nation's newest national scenic trail, which stretches from the coastline of Connecticut to the mountains of New Hampshire. The area you will be hiking in is also part of Guilford’s Timberlands property, a managed forest. It would probably be wise to wear blaze orange during hunting season. Menunkatuck, I’ve learned, is the Native American word for the lands of Guilford and Madison. As noted on the trail map posted near the entrance, there are many tree identification signs, birdhouses, and bat houses located in the woods. They were all installed by Cub Scout Pack 472 of North Guilford and they should be commended for completing such a worthy project. At the listed coordinates, you are looking for one of these tree identification signs. There is some GPSr bounce in the area, so make sure you find the tree with two words in its name (not the Latin name) and no trail blaze on it. After reading the interesting facts about this tree, count the number of letters in the second word of its name, multiply by 11, then subtract the result from the original Northerly coordinate, last three digits. For the Westerly coordinate, just subtract 4 from the last 3 digits. As always, enjoy the journey!
