Geocache Description:

Removal of the log sheet is by way of a nail. A key is not necessary but a torch to check out for creepy crawlies may be advisable. Use a shifter if necessary. My thanks to Tara and John, geocachers from South Africa, who accompanied me to place this cache.

Ngoma Kurira is administered by the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe who charge a small fee for you to either climb or drive to the beacon on the top. The charge is $4.00 per person.

The climb up from the small office at the base of the mountain to the beacon will take you from 90 minutes to 3 hours dependent on your fitness. If you opt to climb you will find magnificent examples of San Art rock paintings. The climbing routes are clearly marked. A 4x4 is required if you opt to drive up the mountain.

Ngoma Kurira was used as an observation and radio relay post for the Rhodesian Security forces during the Rhodesian War during the 1970’s. Remnants of sand bag fortification can still be found. This area fell into the operational area known as Operation Hurricane.

Ngoma Kurira “drums sounding” is a traditional spiritual mountain. There are a number of piles of stones arranged in patterns which hold many secrets. You may find artifacts left to appease the spirits. The mountain is used by church groups in white robes for prayer sessions Please respect them and leave them be.
