Geocache Description:

Welcome to our fourth group of Geocaches in & around the Forest of Dean. Around English Bicknor is a circular route of about 5 miles, with English Bicknor as its centrepiece. The village is situated on a hill above the surrounding fields and woodland. It is a very old village with a Norman church & an ancient motte & bailey (the castle no longer exists). The village was first recorded as a hamlet as early as 1066. There are 9 caches in the series & some lovely views along the way.

We have hidden cache 5 a little further away from the footpath than we would normally do (only a few yards)to keep it out of the way of casual passers by & Muggles. It is a slightly ‘unusual’ cache for us, but we thought it would be something a little different. Please note the area where the cache is hidden can be muddy and slippery when there has been rain, or melting frost or an inversion fog (there’s me being technical again) – which the area does seem to suffer from.

The cache is small & camouflaged.

After bagging cache 5 return down the hill & continue up the stony path gradually gaining height. Where the stony path turns slightly right at N51 49.340 / W002 36.351 you should veer left through the grass, around the bottom edge of the old barn and uphill to a kissing gate at N51 49.315 / W002 36.479, with a hedge on your right hand side. The ground around this gateway is very muddy at present – would suggest wellies or good walking boots. Continue uphill with the holly & bramble hedge still on your RHS to the next cache.
