Geocache Description:

This cache is in full view of Ironstone hut, a solid rustic structure worth visiting at the southern end of Lake Nameless. The hut is nestled on the slopes of Forty lakes Peak that we did not have time to climb.

Some information about the hut....The original Ironstone Hut was built in 1918 by Sydney & Caleb Higgs who were contracted by the Deloraine and District Improvement Association. The idea was to provide accommodation in order to promote tourism and fishing in the area. A stone boat shed was also built on the shore of Lake Nameless to house a small boat, which was purchased by the local community. However this idealism soon faded and by the late 1940s, due to the ravages of weather and time, the hut was showing signs of deterioration; by the 1960s it was in ruins and by the early 1990s was nothing more than a pile of rubble. Members of MHPS (Mountain Huts Preservation Society ) began rebuilding the hut in January 1993. The Department of PWS supplied all materials and lifted the supplies in by helicopter to the hut site. Working bees involved men, women, teenagers and young children– sometimes entire families participated to reach a total tally of 2,500 hours of volunteer labour before the project was completed in 1995.
Our walk in took three hours from lady Lake Hut and we walked as fast as 7 year old legs could go though we were diverted by all sorts of fish, grass hoppers, flowers, fungi, rocks, lakes and snakes, in other words there is plenty to look at on the way south. This approach can be challenging in times of heavy rain as the creek draining the lake has been reported to reach depths of over 2.5 m. Snow cover would make the track difficult to follow....A trip that the CEyres would like to do when they are bigger and stronger is to continue on the walk from Lake Nameless and over the eastern saddle to Whiteley’s Hut at the base of Ironstone Mountain down to Western Creek Falls and then along Wauchope Road to the carpark.

We used the GDA 1:25000 map Lake Mackenzie as our guide but be aware that the pencil pine stands are not as extensive as the map indicates and that the Higgs Track follows a significantly different route near Lady Lake Hut and near the Lucy Long and Weston Lakes.
Be prepared for a lengthy alpine walk with sufficient food and clothing in case of an unexpected overnight stay due to inclement weather. Remember to tell a responsible person about your intended trip and your estimated time of return. Keep in mind that the weather can change rapidly and that snow can be expected at any time of the year.

The cache is a small sistema container that is placed on its side so that condensation does not pool inside of it. It contains a logbook, pencil and a small swap.

There is a toilet nearby! Try following the pad 80m uphill from the hut on the eastern side of the building, the roof of the outhouse can be seen from the lake shore.

BTW, the cache’s name was suggested by the youngest CEyre who wondered if a pig lived here and where was the wolf????
