Geocache Description:

This small rock outcrop is high enough to allow you to see the three alpine lakes of Nameless, Snake and Explorer.

Moments before placing this cache we encountered a decent sized black snake sunning itself on the Higgs Track. This reptilian meeting was appropriate because the stream flowing from Lake Nameless empties into Snake Lake that in turn drains into Lake Explorer. These lakes are well known to fly fisher folk and our party of 4 enthusiastic children were able to spot trout and Galaxias during this walk. The area is rich in fauna and flora and the spectacular plateau deserves to be in a heritage listed area.

We used the GDA 1:25000 map Lake Mackenzie as our guide but be aware that the pencil pine stands are not as extensive as the map indicates and that the Higgs Track follows a significantly different route near Lady Lake Hut and near the Lucy Long and Weston Lakes. Explorer Creek can be quite high during times of rainfall or snow melt so take appropriate care when using the rock bridge.

Be prepared for a lengthy alpine walk with sufficient food and clothing in case of an unexpected overnight stay due to inclement weather. Remember to tell a responsible person about your intended trip and your estimated time of return. Keep in mind that the weather can change rapidly and that snow can be expected at any time of the year.

The cache is a small circular container that holds a log book, pencil and a small swap. Be careful of small reptiles when uncovering the cache as they may find the GZ ideal protection from either sun or rain. Please ensure that the cache is not placed in the bottom of the crack when rehiding it so to keep it slightly more waterproof.

Enjoy the walk in the alpine areas of Tasmania.
