From Holbrook take US 180 East towards the Painted Desert National Park. There are many pull outs to park on the north side of the road BEFORE you reach the bridge for the Little Colorado River.
Look north and on the far left notice the town of Holbrook with I40 cutting through it. Also you can see many trains on the BNSF. Look towards the 2 large rock outcroppings close to Holbrook. Below the outcroppings, the Little Colorado joins the Rio Puerco. Early travelers felt this was the easiest crossing of the rivers. It became known as Horsehead Crossing and was the original location of Holbrook. It got the name because when horses swam the river, only their heads could be seen. Kit Carson had an encampment in the area when he was conducting the Army's campaign against the Navajos. The area of the crossing is now on private land.
