We Romulans began as a revolutionary group of Vulcans who were referenced as "those who march beneath the Raptor's wings" and refused to accept the Vulcan philosopher Surak's teachings of complete suppression of emotions. Around 400 AD in your calendar, is when we split off from Vulcan society and began the long journey to the planets Romulus and Remus, the two Romulan homeworlds.

Romulus had no sentient species until we colonized it around 400 AD. A sapient species called the Remans developed on Remus but we conquered them and they became a lower class in Romulan society. Because the planet is tidally locked to its sun, one side of the planet is in constant darkness. Living on this dark side has made the bat-like Remans Remans extremely sensitive to light. Remans do have some telepathic abilities, green-tinted skin, and pointed ears.
Like the Vulcans, we have pointed ears, upswept eyebrows, and copper-based blood that is green when oxygenated in the arteries and copper or rust colored when deoxygenated in the veins. Many Romulans have a V-shaped ridge above the bridge of their nose. Like Vulcans, Romulans almost always have dark or black hair. We also share the longevity common to our Vulcan cousins. We can expected to live past 300 years. However, the similarities end when it comes to mental abilities. The Romulans do not share their Vulcan brothers' unique capacity for telepathy, we are more emotional, very cunning and even violent, and extremely motivated by honor and protocol.
Our Romulan ale is a popular is popular throughout the galaxy but was illegal because of a Federation trade embargo in the late 23rd century through the late 24th century. Despite this, it is often traded and consumed openly.
Our government is very similar to that of your Roman Republic before it became the Roman Empire. The Romulan government consists of at least two parts: The Senate is the main governing and legislative body that meets in a large chamber in the capital city on Romulus. The Senate is headed by the Praetor, followed by the Proconsul. The Continuing Committee is composed of nine members. Only the Praetor, who heads the Committee, is guaranteed a seat; others, even the chairman of the Tal Shiar, must compete to be allowed in.

Our military is a "combined" service, like Starfleet. Its version of "joint chiefs of staffs" is the "High Command" One lowly rank in the Romulan Guard is "uhlan". The lowest commissioned military rank is "sublieutenant", the next-higher rank of "lieutenant," "Centurion" is the next-highest rank and probably the most common. "Subcommander" is reserved for executive officers on our ships, but in rare cases, subcommanders may captain their own Warbirds. "Commander" is the rank reserved for individual Warbird COs, buut, some commanders have had charge over fleets of Warbirds. "Admiral" is the highest naval-style rank and is accorded to sector commanders or fleet commanders. Other senior officer ranks, such as major, colonel and general, are reserved for members of the Tal Shiar, a Romulan intelligence organization. The name is an homage to the Tal Shaya, a Vulcan method of execution from the original Star Trek series where the neck is broken with a swift stroke for a quick and merciful death.
We have had quite a colorful history with you humans. We have an extremely precise civilization compared to the humans. There are many inaccurate depictations of our 33 letter alphabet and complex language. Those who have incomplete data are generally very inaccurate also. You have accused us of being overly violent, deceptive and manipulative. We are often accused of out-right lying, which might be the case, if our interests are at stake. We have been known to “misdirect” but this is nothing that the Federation has done to us in the past. Here is a brief timeline of our mutual history.
