Clan Munro

Crest: An eagle perching Proper
Motto: Dread God
War cry: Caisteal Folais 'na Theine (Castle Foulis in flames).
Pipe Music: Bealach na Broige
Hunting Tartan: 42nd Black Watch

The origin of the clan is that the Munros came from Ireland and settled in Scotland in the 11th century and that they fought as mercenary soldiers under the Earl of Ross who defeated Viking invaders in Ross-shire. The clan under Chief Donald Munro, son of O'Ceann were granted lands in Ross-shire and a seat at Foulis Castle as a reward for helping King Malcolm II of Scotland to defeat Viking invaders from Scandinavia.

Foulis Castle has been the home of Clan Munro since the early 12th century. Plans of the original castle are long lost, but the grounds still contain the site of an 11th century Moat.

The present Castle dates from the middle of 18th century containing in its Georgian structure the remains of a much earlier and different defensive keep.

Sir Harry Munro returned after the 1745 Rising in which he lost both his father and uncle at the Battle of Falkirk, to find his ancient home destroyed by fire, and set about building the house you see today maintaining what he could of the old l6th century part.

Foulis is still occupied by the Munros of Foulis the current Chief is Hector W. Munro of Foulis

Foulis Castle is closed to the public but occasionally opens for events but there is a lovely Clan visitor Centre called the Storehouse of Foulis which is on the A9 were you can also watch the seals on the firth, which also has a cache nearby.
