Geocache Description:

This cache is placed here in memory of many happy hours spent playing on the nearby Silver Sands beach and watching the ships coming in.

On what is now a housing estate once stood a rather busy timber wharf.

I remember on many occasions watching the ships coming in, the catepillar tracked cranes removing the contents of the ships hold before the large yellow forklifts would place the timber in big stacks.
Sometimes on the weekend when nobody was working we would sneak along the edge of the dock and around the chainlink fence to go and run in between the stacks. It seemed very naughty at the time!

On the north side of the river the harbour is still active, dealing with scrap metal, but most of the shipping now uses the Aldrington Basin at the east end of the harbour.

Sadly, all that now exists of the wharf are the large dock cleats used for mooring the ships up with.
