Geocache Description:

This cache is on the Platteland near the town of Volksrust. Short drive on dirt road, about 2km. Medium plastic container with log book and a pen. The road can be slippery wen wet.

The cache is about the Merino Sheep. This breed is a wool sheep and in a ewe's lifetime she will produce a single strand of wool fibre that can span the earth's equator. Sheep are shorn on average once a year and the wool is then sold on a public auction in PE. Sheep are pregnant for about 152 days and give birth to 1-4 lambs. The SA record for a Merino ram is R250 000 that was bought in 2011 by a farmer in the Wakkerstroom area.
This location is the venue of the Merino Veldramklub where different breeders enter there rams to be tested under the same veld conditions against other rams. They are weighed monthly and their wool are tested for quality, thickness and length. These together with clean yield are the main factors that determine wool prices. The price for Merino wool is about R 189 per kg clean wool.

Hopefully you get to see some of these rams around
