Geocache Description:

This cache is the 21st point on the Dartmoor Forest boundary, as established by the 1240 Perambulation. More details about the Perambulation can be found on the cache page for the Dartmoor Forest Bonus. On the front page of the logbook is an adjustment to be made to the Bonus co-ordinates, which you will need to find the Bonus.

The hill now called Eylesbarrow, was referred to as Elysburghe in the return of the Perambulation of 1240. The hill dominates the skyline for miles around, and so also gives panoramic views of the surrounding moor, and is an especially good vantage point from which to see Sheepstor and Burrator reservoir. It is high and wet enough to cultivate cotton grass on its summit, normally something you only see on the more remote areas of the moor.

From the summit are wide views north to Black Ridge, Cut Hill and Hangingstone Hill and, on a clear day, the tip of Cosdon Hill, the start of the Perambulation, can be seen almost twenty miles away. To the east are Caters Beam and Ryder Hill.

There are two cairns on the summit of Eylesbarrow, and a “PCWW” post (Plymouth Corporation Water Works) marks the southeast limit of the Burrator catchment. Near the southern cairn is a rusty metal post embedded in a granite base. This probably at one time bore an inscription on its flattened head, but this has long since corroded away, and the exact purpose of this marker is unknown. Although Eylesbarrow was a boundary of the Forest, this particular marker was placed long after 1240.

If doing this cache as a standalone, the closest parking is at the Scout Hut (waypoint below), and there is a good track most of the way. If doing the Perambulation as a route, the next point on is Siward’s (Nuns) Cross, and it is an easy walk downhill in a straight line from Eylesbarrow to there.
