This is a puzzle cache. It is not at the listed location. Find the true location from the information below.

Unlike some of my previous puzzles, there is no hidden information. Just solve the problems to get the final coordinates. Hopefully solving them will give you a fun mental workout.


The geocache, Cube’s Revenge by wwd2 inspired me to create this one. That multistage cache in the Huntley Bowl area has cube-based puzzles. This puzzle cache has three square-based puzzles.

These are all original puzzles. I hope you enjoy them. I do reserve all copyrights, but of course you can make copies to help you solve this cache.


There is a bonus question for each puzzle. You don’t need to answer the bonus questions to find the cache, but they might help. If you send me email with the bonus answers, I will add you to the BONUS HONOR ROLE below.

Problem #1 – Unfolded Cube

You’ve all probably seen the sides of a cube drawn as an unfolded cross shape of six squares (Figure 2). But there are other ways to unfold the sides of a cube (for example Figure 3).

How many unique ways are there to unfold a cube into a shape of six squares joined at their unfolded edges? Rotations and mirror images don’t count. Your answer will be in the form AB (two digits – either could be zero).

Bonus question: The two examples given both can fit into a 3 by 4 rectangle. For bonus points, send me the count of how many of the possible solutions do not fit into a 3 by 4 rectangle?



Problem #2 – Four Diamonds

Four one-inch squares are lined up corner-to-corner along a straight line as shown. Points P1 and P2 are at the midpoints of their respective sides.

What is the straight-line distance from P1 to P2? Your answer will be in the form C.D inches. The answer is rounded to the number of digits shown.

Bonus question: You can solve this the way they teach in school and after a number of calculations get the right answer. However, there is a slick way to work the problem that gives the exact answer with dramatically reduced calculations. For bonus points, send me a short sentence or two describing that simplification.



Problem #3 – Three Little Squares

Three big one-inch squares (S3) are joined corner-to-corner to make an equilateral triangle. Inside that triangle, three little squares (S1) are fit into a similar shape. Finally, the line segment from the little square to the corner of the large triangle is used to form the medium square (S2) as shown.

What is the ratio of areas of the medium square to the little square (S2:S1)? Your answer will be in the form E.F:1. The answer is rounded to the number of digits shown.

Bonus question: You can solve this the way they teach in school and after a number of calculations get the right answer. However, I actually threw in some misdirection. For bonus points, send me a short sentence or two describing how to simplify the problem and still get the exact answer.
