Geocache Description:

This cache is the 11th point on the Dartmoor Forest boundary, as established by the 1240 Perambulation. More details about the Perambulation can be found on the cache page for the Dartmoor Forest Bonus. On the front page of the logbook is an adjustment to be made to the Bonus co-ordinates, which you will need to find the Bonus.

Dartmeet has been very popular with tourists for decades, as the huge car park will testify. Like all large river confluences it is very picturesque, and if you throw in a bridge or two, you have a tourist honeypot.

The old clapper bridge is nearly all gone, with an isolated span in the middle of the river, where there used to five. It was apparently destroyed by flood in 1826, but was rebuilt again in 1888 by the Dartmoor Preservation Association, only to be knocked down once more. The “modern bridge” next door, which takes the B3357 across the river, is not all that new, having been built in 1792.

To reach the cache from the car park, cross the road bridge and follow the footpath signs marked “Combestone via Stepping Stones”. Note that the stepping stones are impassable when the river is high after rain.

If doing the Perambulation as a route, the next point on is Okebrokesfote. There is no longer any public access along the river side, so you will need to follow the Dartmoor Way up to Huccaby Farm, and then take the bridleway to Week Ford, or continue past the cache to Combestone before heading down to the ford.

DO NOT TRY TO CROSS THE RIVER IF THE STEPPING STONES ARE COVERED - THEY ARE VERY SLIPPERY (AS I FOUND OUT!)
