Geocache Description:

When the tide is out, the Bray 'Back Beach' is accessable from an entrance on the North Pier. At high tide, you can get there via a trail behind the factory buildings.

Coastal erosion has changed the landscape of the 'Back Beach' beyond recognition. At the beginning of the last century the railway line had to be supported in some places as a result of this erosion. The ruins of these supports can be seen on the beach. In 1915 the railway line had to move inland to where it is today. After all these years it is once again under threat from the sea. A lagoon once existed beside the north pier and the ruins of cottages were still visible in the 1940's. There was once a Martello tower on this stretch of coastline, which was demolished long ago. The remains of an ancient forest can still be seen today. The beach was a popular recreation area at the turn of the last century. Today, when the tide is out, a small stretch of this flat sandy beach can be seen, and still enjoyed. The rest of the beach which joins up with Shankill is stony and rocky. The old bricks and ruins you see today are the remains of a bygone era.
