Geocache Description:

This cache was originally hidden by Sid James and has been laying in the woodland unfound since May 2010. I stumbled upon this one while looking for places to hide my new series of caches and after speaking with the CO decided to reinstate it as it is quite a cunning little cache in an area of natural beauty.

The Burton Mail Centenary Woodland was opened to the public on Saturday May 2nd 1998, the actual date of the paper’s centenary.
The woodland was created in partnership with the Borough Council and with the support of Carlsberg Tetley (the then owners of the land) and the National Forest Company.
The initial work was to plant over 4500 native trees and shrubs, including Willow, Poplar, Alder, Oak and Ash, to create a floodplain woodland.
The area is part of the flood plain for the River Trent, so whilst there are plenty of opportunities for the kids to feed the swans, ducks, and geese, the area can be under water for week or more if the rain has been heavy
Floodplain woodland is a rare habitat today as the productive land found in floodplains has typically been cleared of tree cover to allow agricultural use.
Surfaced and mown pathways have since been created throughout the area of the woodland, which you are free to explore if you wish.

The cache is medium in size but only contains a micro log book. Bring your own pen/pencil.
Be careful of muggles as this is a popular area for dog walkers.
Please take care opening and closing the cache and replace exactly as found.

Terrain is fairly gentle but can get very boggy in bad weather. It can be done by foot or cycle and buggys will be fine so long as the weather is dry.
The Co-ords can be a little shaky as there is a fair degree of tree cover.

The Car park Co-Ords are for the road leading down to the car park. Watch out for the large anti caravan hump and note that the gate is closed between 5pm and 8am in winter and 9pm and 8am in summer, Although on road parking is available as is limited time parking at supermarket.

Many thanks to Sid James for allowing me to use his cunning container and brilliant hiding place.
