Geocache Description:

This cache celebrates the life and loves of my father Herman Erlichson. It is located in High Rock Park in Staten Island. The hide is off a trail and an easy walk from the entrance at 200 Nevada Avenue.

My father and I walked in High Rock Park frequently when I was growing up in the 1980s. He was a Professor at the College of Staten Island. He loved both the intellectual and physical freedom of the academic life, arranging his days to permit midday walks through the greenway. We would walk around what we would call the Swamp Trail, carefully navigating its many wooden bridges and planks, while talking about school, physics, and life. During the summers we would visit the national parks, walking the trails of Zion and Bryce, but the local trails of High Rock never got boring to us. Herman Erlichson (1931-2012) grew up in Brooklyn, attended Brooklyn Technical High School, City College, the Sorbonne, Harvard University, Columbia University and Rutgers University. Along the way, he earned two doctorates, one in Philosophy of Science and one in Physics. He published over 80 papers on various topics, but his true love would always be the outdoors, nature and his own family. Google Scholar has a fairly comprehensive listing of his academic work: http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=ZLjqTsAAAAAJ&hl=en The cache is a micro container that contains a poem, entitled River, which he wrote in 1969 when he was 38 years old. I suggest reading it while enjoying the beauty of the setting. You may use the back of the poem as a logbook. Please bring your own pen. Be sure to hide the cache well since it seems to be a high traffic spot.
