*Important note*
You need to rsvp for this even if you want to be part of the geocaching group at the ecola state park cleanup. Solv requires us to give a headcount a week before the event. We will be hiking down from ecola state park to ecola cove which can be a very muddy and slipery hike thus the 3.5 terrain rating.
“The Oregon Coast is a beautiful part of the world and needs a little TLC once in awhile! We all enjoy the beauty of nature so we should help maintain that beauty through direct action!”

The first all-volunteer beach cleanup in the nation was held here in Oregon in 1984. Twenty-seven years later, thousands of volunteers continue to come together twice a year each spring and fall to take care of our beaches. The beautiful Oregon coastline accumulates trash washed ashore after winter storms, and volunteers will brave the spring weather on Saturday, March 26th to pick up litter and protect the health of our watersheds and oceans.
Marine debris damages ocean ecosystems, wildlife, and coastal economies. Trash travels with the wind and rain, which carries litter downhill into our streams and rivers and out to sea. Ocean currents circulate litter from the land and trash dumped by vessels around the Pacific Ocean and to our beaches. Some kinds of trash such as plastics may never fully “go away,” but rather break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Small pieces of plastic have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, and other wildlife, and can be fatal if they obstruct the gut. Marine debris is a global problem that generations of Oregonians have been combating locally by reducing, reusing, and recycling waste at home, and participating in statewide cleanups.
Time Line:
7:30AM Meet at Sunset Transit Center
8:00AM Depart for Cannon Beach/Ecola State Park
10:00AM Arrive at the "Check In" location to collect our supplies and start the clean up.
1:00PM Roughly finish the clean up and enjoy the many festivities surrounding this event!
4:00PM Invade local brewery/restaurant to have a meal and pat ourselves on the back for a job well done.
What To Bring:
As always please be prepared for the conditions that mother nature will be providing us! Also the following items as well:
Come prepared, stay safe, have fun
This year, in addition to the basic suggestions that volunteers bring raingear, wear sturdy shoes and stay safe, we are encouraging volunteers to help reduce the environmental footprint of the cleanup event itself. While the net environmental impact of the event is immensely positive, it’s hard to spend a couple hours picking up litter and not ask can we do more? Inspired by a “Bring Your Own” philosophy, veteran cleanup volunteers share a few tips to maximize cleanup efforts:
Trash on the tideline at Cape Blanco in spring 2010.
Bring a bucket or reusable bag to reduce the amount of plastic trash bags used
Bring an old colander to sift the tide lines for bite-sized bits of plastic
Bring a pair of gardening gloves to reduce use of plastic gloves
Bring a reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug
Carpool and use public transportation where possible
Plan ahead and pack a “trash-free” lunch
Send SOLV your stories of efforts to achieve a personal zero waste to landfill day!
Please avoid Western Snowy Plover habitat. Stay outside of roped areas please.
Steer clear of California sea lions for your safety and your pets. Increasing numbers are reported to be infected with a harmful bacteria. To report stranded marine mammals call 1-800-452-7888.
Never turn your back to the sea!
VERY IMPORTANT INFO!!!
We need everyone to register here within the group as well as on the SOLV website as well. The SOLV website is not set up yet for registration! I will email everyone with instructions for how to register with SOLV for the group soon.
As always if anyone has any questions or comments please email me!
