Norman Schwarzkopf's legend was born in Vietnam, grew through his peacetime assignments in the 70's and 80's, and was solidified with his service as Commander of all coalition forces during the first Gulf War.
In Vietnam Schwarzkopf rushed to the aid of some of his men who were trapped in a minefield. Schwarzkopf entered the minefield and physically restrained a Soldier who was flailing around after being wounded by a mine. Schwarzkopf used a pinning technique he had learned as a wrestler so a splint could be applied to the Soldier's shattered leg. A nearby Soldier struck another mine injuring Schwarzkopf and many others. Schwarzkopf led his remaining men out of the minefield and ordered them to mark the safe path with shaving cream so others could follow them to safety. Schwarzkopf's actions earned him his third Silver Star for bravery.
General Schwarzkopf rose through the ranks and his career culminated when he was assigned as commander of U.S. Central Command and all coalition forces during Operation Desert Shield. General Schwarzkopf's offensive operational plan, called Operation Desert Storm, featured the "left hook" strategy that went into Iraq behind the Iraqi forces occupying Kuwait and was widely credited with bringing the ground war to a close in just four days.
