Geocache Description:

This cache is not on the ancient Forest boundary of the 1240 Perambulation, but has been placed as a waymark between Rakernesbrokysfote and Rattlebrook Head. More details about the Perambulation can be found on the cache page for the Dartmoor Forest Bonus. On the front page of the logbook is an adjustment to be made to the Bonus co-ordinates, which you will need to find the Bonus.

In the late 19th century, the peat of Amicombe Hill around Rattlebrook Head was harvested from the moor to be compressed for fuel briquettes. The manager of the peat works was provided with a small house about half a mile downstream, which had a much better outlook than the dreary land around the riverhead.

The stone for the house was quarried at the nearby Green Tor, and the marks of the quarrying are still visible there. The house was originally called “Dunnagoat Cottage”, in reference to the nearby Dunnagoat Tors. When the peat works were eventually abandoned, the house quickly fell into ruin, and has since then simply been called “Bleak House”.

If doing this cache as a standalone, the closest parking is near the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford (waypoint below). From here head up to Widgery Cross before heading towards Great Links Tor. Before you reach the tor you come across the bridleway which will take you all the way to Bleak House.

If doing the Perambulation as a route, the next point on is Rattlebrook Head. Cross the Rattlebrook again and continue on the path north on the west bank of the brook. Follow this until it intersects the old peat railway line. From there head up to Hunt Tor, before heading back down to the next cache, so avoiding most of the mire.
