Geocache Description:

The cache is situated at the former control tower at RNAS Twatt airfield (HMS Tern). Public access to the tower can be gained through either the old camp or along the old runway. it is advisable to park at one of the locations given below and walk the rest of the way. many of the wartime buildings are in exceptional condition and the walk to the tower is pleasant and calm when the weather is on your side.

Although the tower is not actually black, during the summer months it is silhouetted against the horizon at sunset when viewed from our home and is referred to as the 'black tower' by our child. Access to the tower can be gained via entrances to the former camp at:

N 59 05 09.2 W 003 16 33.4

Or

N 59 05 01.7 W 003 17 38.7

I would recommend parking at the entrance on the main road if there is space and walking along the former runway to the tower. If there is no space to park at the first entrance, there is plenty of room at the second. it is best not to drive beyond the entrances as the ground can be muddy at times and unsuited to non 4x4 vehicles.

If approaching along the runway, once you pass the tower, continue along the track until you reach a field gate. Pass through the gate and turn right with the former dwelling which was used as officer's billets during the war on your right. Continue beyond the next kissing gate until the next junction where you should turn left toward the second entrance. When you exit the camp, turn left and enjoy a peaceful stroll along the quiet road back to the main road and your car.

aside from the tower, other buildings remaining at the site include the characteristic tanoy buildings such as the one close to the tower itself and the old theatre building, complete ith former ticket officevand projection room - the stage is even visible to the rear. As you enter the site from access 2, the foundations of the old accommodation huts can be see on the left and the theatre is the building on the right beyond which you must turn to head to the the tower. If approaching from this direction, remember to turn left at the field gate after the kissing gate as you pass the ruinous croft on your left. The tower, associated bomb shelters and pillboxes have recently been listed as historically significant buildings and are well worth a look if you are passing.

in the summer the fields adjacent to the tower usually contain cattle so dogs should be kept on a lead so as not to worry them. please also note that the 3rd entrance to the camp, which passes a farmhouse, is private and should not be taken.

the cache contains a log and pencil and a small toy to exchange.
