This is one of 25 caches Q125 Mesquite Geocache Challenge placed within the City of Mesquite as one of the many events throughout the year to help celebrate Mesquite’s Quasquicentennial: A year-long event to foster a pride of community, as well as develop an appreciation for Mesquite’s history.
This cache is placed in the public area at Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 701 E. Kearney St., Mesquite, which is the only National Register of Historic Places property within the city limits. Stephen Decatur Lawrence obtained 640 acres on his 21st birthday and began building the main house first, as a small, one-story structure. It eventually became the 4,000-square foot home seen today. It is a good example of the evolution of domestic buildings on the North Texas Plains region. The site also received a Texas Historical Marker in 1998.
