Geocache Description:

Cache is a green ammo can with log book, pen, pencil, pencil sharpener, and small items

The Drakestown Preserve was acquired in 2010 from the family of the late Jack Borgenicht. Borgenicht was a legend in Long Valley, where he owned the largest preserved farm in Morris County and helped start the area’s first brewpub. Among other things, he was a businessman, a philanthropist and an avid mountain climber who made history at age 81 as the oldest person to scale Mount Rainier. He had a passion for amassing open space and farmland in the Long Valley area.

Located off Drakestown Road and Fairview Avenue in Long Valley, the preserve sits high on the Schooley’s Mountain Ridge, a flat-topped ridge that runs through Washington Township. The preserve is open to the public for passive recreation such as hiking and nature observation.

Most of the Drakestown Preserve consists of mature forest lands crossed by meandering streams that feed the South Branch of the Raritan River. The South Branch supplies drinking water to 1.5 million New Jersey residents, so keeping the property in its natural state helps protect this important water resource.

Five years after Borgenicht’s death at age 93, the New Jersey Conservation Foundation and the New Jersey Water Supply Authority bought the 228-acre wooded property at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Drakestown Road for $2.8 million, with the help of county and state open space funds. It is now New Jersey Conservation Foundation’s largest preserve in Morris County.
