Geocache Description:

Take a wee hike from the picturesque Evansdale Glen up Evansdale Creek to the Evansdale Creek Falls.

This is a lightly marked track through dense bush that can be muddy in places - even in dry weather. The walk takes 30 minutes return. As it passes through a narrow, fern lined gorge it is not recommended that you attempt this in heavy rain. Just past the cache, which is a 10 litre bucket, you come across the surprisingly large Evansdale Creek Falls.

Due to the density of the trees and narrow gorge the accuracy at time of placement was not great. However there really are limited places to hide a cache of this size and it should be visible from a few metres at the right angle. It is approx. 3 metres above the track/creek on the true left bank.

Evansdale Glen is one of my favourite places. On the day this cache was placed the Cumbyrocks whanau enjoyed a lovely picnic in the glen, followed by a ramble to place the cache at the falls.

Anthony Hamel in 'Dunedin's Tracks and Trails' notes: "Since the establishment of the reserve in 1912, Evansdale Glen has been a popular picnic area, originally due in part to its proximity to the railway. The Evansdale Station and Careys Creek were also major entry and exit points into the Silver Peaks, prior to modern cars and the building of Mountain Road."

And we have Mr Downie Stewart to thank for this wonderful wee spot. From the ODT: "The credit for the achievement of this desirable result belongs chiefly to Mr Downie Stewart, who, when the property including the Glen came into the market several months ago, protected the interests of the city by personally purchasing it with the object that it might be handed over to the Corporation."

Those tracks are fun to explore and, unless you have been caching a little while, have a few caches along them to collect, including one in the carpark very close to the trailhead for this cache!

Hopefully you get the chance to spend the day out here, have a picnic, and explore the trails. As you can see from the photos the tracks are kid capable, with a bit extra help and supervision.

The Evansdale Creek gorge is so narrow it is virtually impossible to get lost and the walk is not far, however you should ensure you follow tramping best practice making sure you are well prepared and that someone knows where you are.

For the tidy Kiwi's amongst us there is also a wonderful opportunity for some CITO in the car park area.
