An alley or alleyway is a narrow lane found in urban areas, often for pedestrians only. Torquay has many of these alleys and because of Torquay’s hilly terrain they often have many steps.
Different areas of the country have different names for these alleys so depending upon your roots you may recognize some of the following:
Ginnel
Twitten
Gitty or Jetty
Gulley
Chare
Shut
Snicket
Wynd
Pend
Ope
Snickelway (a portmanteau of the words ‘snicket ginnel & alleyway).
The last of these is our personal favourite, hence the name of the cache!
The cache is a micro with room only for a log book so please bring your own pen.
On the last day of term at our old school all the teachers used to take a break from conventional teaching. Our old maths teacher, known as Frank, used to set us mathematical puzzles. On the last day of one particular term the Geography teacher was sick and so Frank was looking after the combined classes. We were studying map reading in Geography and so Frank decided that he would get us to decode map co-ordinates. Little did we know that this skill would come in so useful one day!
Frank gave us the following information :
Using a basic letter to number converter + a bit more, you can convert
ZERO to 64
FIVE and NINE both to 42
Using Frank’s code the coded co-ordinates for this cache are:
N 50° 27. (First digit of FOUR, First digit of THREE, Last digit of SIX)
W 3° 30. (First digit of SEVEN, Half of first digit of EIGHT, Last digit of ONE)
