Geocache Description:

Welcome to the first ever Geocaching Road Rally! We will be meeting at the picnic shelter at Fox River Parkway North. Event time 10:30am-??? Rain or shine.

Wifeyole, Sevencards and I will be supplying hot dogs and brats with all the fixings. We'll start cooking around 11am but feel free to come anytime between 10:30am and 4pm. Please consider bringing a dish, salad, dessert, etc to pass. Also please bring your own beverages.

For those of you unfamiliar with a road rally, its a combination of an "Amazing Race" meets scavenger hunt meets, in this case, geocaching skill challenge. Each team will consist of 4-5 individuals. Each team will drive a pre-defined course along the way stopping to find some new caches and have some wacky fun at various stops along the way.

ALL are welcome to attend the event and enjoy the food and geo-chat.

Sign up for the first 12 official Road Rally teams is complete. As other cachers have shown interest we will attempt to accommodate more road rally teams on the fly at 10:30am and after so more can participate in the rally and get the new caches that will be placed.

Each 4-5 person team will need the following:
1) One member to bring a digital camera and be the photographer and digital scavenger hunter
2) One member to bring a vehicle with an odometer and with enough gasoline in it to go 20-40 miles and enough room to fit the entire team.
3) One member with good reading / navigating skills.
4) One member with a valid drivers license.
5) At least 1 GPSr with capability to manually enter coordinates for 8-10 new geocaches on the course. *
6) $5 per team member to complete certain tasks
7) A plastic bag to bring back scavenger hunt items
8) BYOP

*The new caches on the rally will be published the day after the event.

Children are welcome and encouraged to attend the event, there is a nice playground at the park, but I would recommend only kids 12 or older on a rally team given the number of stops and getting in and out of the car safely and quickly. You know your children best so ultimately the choice is up to you.

The course will take at least 3 hours depending on how well you do. If you take more than 5 hours, you will be asked to return to the picnic area. (this is very unlikely unless you get lost or get really stuck)

Each team will be given a starting time in advance. These times will be staggered so that not everyone is following right behind one another, however depending on fast or slow you are, you could pass or be passed by other teams along the way. The first team out will have the best chance for FTFs as the caches will not be published until June 10th. The first car out will be picked by a lottery based on when you check into the sign up cache. See that cache for more information.

We have our twelve captained teams and the results are in from the NBA lottery type draft. There were a few surprises!

An independent random number generator was used with Youngins team being assigned 1 blinded number for being FTF on the sign up cache, jpleva and his team were assigned 2 blinded numbers, etc with lilnapo being assigned 12 blinded numbers. If one of your team numbers was chosen you were placed in the next slot. Here were the results in reverse order as chosen.

#12 Show Me Your Badger (BeaverRetrivers) (down 1 spot) - 9:50am
#11 Sons_wife_Bif (down 1 spot) 9:40am
#10 Chillin with my peeps (lilnapo) (up 2 spots) 9:30am

#2 Team CannonBall Run (jpleva/SEVENCARDS) (stayed the same) 8:10am
#1 and POLE POSITION

Youngins3/Hack1of2 (stayed the same) 8:00am

Congratulations!

Youngins3/Hack1of2 will go out at 8am. Other teams will go out in 10 minute intervals. All members of the team must be present at the start of the Rally. Please be at least a few minutes early as your start time will be your "go" time. I will start providing packets and instructions at that time.

If you cannot make your start time, please try to switch with someone who goes after you. If your plans change and your team cannot make the rally, please let me know as soon as possible!

Although this is mostly for fun, this can also be rather competitive and usually is. Team and individual prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
1) best overall points (based on questions answered, mileage, items brought back, tasks completed, and geocaches found on the course)
2) best time (without getting a speeding ticket)
3) best photograph of the day (judged by your peers)
4) ????
Scoring will be done once all teams have arrived back to the park or 3pm-4pm. Whatever comes first. You do not need to be present at 3pm to win.

Specific rules will be made known on Rally day. But its really not about the rules, its about the fun and camaraderie with fellow cachers!

Other non official teams coming may start going out at 10:30am in 10 minute intervals to run the course and find the new caches. Let me know if there are any questions!

Disclaimer: Everything on the course is optional. This is not a race, its a rally. Go at your own speed. Obey all laws. By agreeing to go on the Road Rally you are stating you are taking care of yourself and the organizers of the Rally will not be held responsible for your actions. Safety first but have fun too.

Please feel free to contact with me with questions via email or this webpage. Keep this page on your watch list for updates. Otherwise, we hope to see you on June 9th!
