Palantíri

The palantíri (sometimes translated as "Seeing Stones") were stones that could be used in communication with one another, and also to see many things across the face of the world. When its master looked in it, he could communicate with other Stones and anyone who might be looking into them; people of great power can manipulate the Stones to see virtually any part of the world.

Sméagol

Sméagol was a Hobbit of Stoor-kind who lived on the banks of the Anduin in the later Third Age. He was an inquisitive Hobbit who was interested in roots and beginnings. His friend came upon the One Ring, but Sméagol murdered him and took the Ring. He was eventually exiled by his people, and crept into the roots of the Misty Mountains, where he became the creature of the dark better known as Gollum.
