Geocache Description:

Fourth of a series of seven caches which make for a nice easy walk of about one and a half miles around Kings Hill suitable for GeoKidz and GeoHounds.

Kings Hill Cache ‘n’ Dash is a series consisting of various caches including micros, 35MM film canisters and a few fun caches.

Kings Hill Development started in 1989 near West Malling, on land previously occupied by RAF West Malling with an ultimate aim is to have some 2750 homes and 2 million square feet (186,000 m²) of commercial properties.

During the 1930s many airshows and displays were held by aviators such as Amy Johnson and Alan Cobham, flying from a grass runway. As war approached, the airfield was taken over by the military, to become RAF West Malling in 1940, serving in the front line against the Luftwaffe.

After closure as an operational air station in 1969, West Malling acquired a more civilian guise, hosting several major Great Warbirds Air Displays during the 70s and 80s, until eventually closing completely as an airfield.

Now The Gibson Building, and used as Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council offices, the former Officers Mess, built in 1939, is now a Grade II listed building, the Officers' Mess itself is used as the Council Chamber. A common layout was used at all RAF stations, so that visiting officers were able to find their way around easily. The brick-built building still shows remnants of the painted camouflage pattern used during the war. A number of H-block accommodation buildings are also in use as offices.

Situated near the site of the old guard house, a memorial to the personnel stationed at RAF West Malling was unveiled on 9 June 2002. Otto Bechtold, the FW-190 pilot, was a guest of honour at the ceremony.

Kings Hill has various facilities including two supermarkets, a public house, two primary schools, a doctor's surgery, a veterinary surgery, opticians, pharmacist, restaurants, cafés, bars and a Leisure health club. Kings Hill has its own cricket club, established in 2006, and a private golf club.

In 2004 the area was named as one of the wealthiest places in Britain in terms of average household income.
Parts of the 2007 Channel 4 drama series Cape Wrath were shot in the village.

This easy walk will take you past some of Kings Hill public sculptures commissioned by the developers. . On the roundabout between the business park and the residential area is’ A different ball game’ by Kevin Atherton which consists of a 10 ft (3.0 m) diameter reflective ball being pushed in different directions by three life-size bronze figures which were cast from local people.

'Tug of War' by W Stanley Proctor. A bronze sculpture featuring six children - three boys and three girls - plus a dog, pulling the rope in a tug of war. It is nearly 20 ft long.

'Running Airman' Commemorating the aviation past of Kings Hill. The memorial honours the military and civilian personnel who were based there throughout the years and comprises a life size bronze sculpture of a running airman surrounded by four vertical granite panels depicting the history of the airfield. A time capsule has been buried in the memorial's foundations put together by children from the Kings Hill School detailing life at Kings Hill at the time of the installation.

'When the sky's the limit the spirits soar' by Rick Kirby. To commemorate and celebrate Bill Rouse's life and achievements. Three stainless steel figures soar skywards in a spirit of celebration. Piercing the space created by the figures is a shaft of stainless steel 'light' which takes the figures out of the courtyard and beyond. The piece is intended to represent dynamism as well as positivism. In memory of Bill Rouse III (1942 - 2003)

You may also see the original Control Tower - a listed building which is largely complete in the form it was in 1942, now surrounded by modern housing, and waiting restoration and eventual new use.

We hope you enjoy our first series.
