Geocache Description:

In the late 18th to mid-19th century pirates hunted along the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. They robbed, captured, and murdered river travelers. The travelers boats were either sunk or sold down river along with their livestock and cargo.

One of their primary lairs was at Cave-In-Rock. This notorious cave is now within the confines of Illinois' Cave-In-Rock State Park. Another well known hideout for pirates was just above the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers in a cypress swamp near the mouth of the Cache River.

A far lesser known pirate hideout was near Memphis. Pirates would strike out at shipping moving along the Mississippi near Memphis then escape using the Wolf River and disappear up the minor tributary known as Stanky Creek. When the creek was up they were able to take flat bottom boats almost all the way to their lair. When it wasn't they had a few mile hike. Still though, it provided them a safe and stable lair.

Eventually local law enforcement gained in strength and one cold February morning they ambushed the pirates at the mouth of the Wolf and Mississippi rivers. Several of the pirates were killed and most of the rest were captured and later hanged.

When questioned under duress the pirates gave up the location of their hideout. Interestingly though, none of them would say where their treasure was hidden. For years amateur sleuths have searched without success for the treasure of the "Stanky Creek" pirates. Perhaps you will have better luck.

The cache is a lock and lock container. Beware of bikes when on the trail, ticks when off the trail and mosquitos during warm weather. Obey park hours, watch your step when searching for the cache, and have fun!
