Geocache Description:

This cache is located on a short walk between "Bar Beach" and "Merimbula Aquarium"... You are looking for a small Sistema container...

Welcome to the "Historic Fishermens Lookout"

This shelter was built in the late 1940’s by
fishermen Don Mitchelson and Rupert Gray to
replace an earlier wooden structure (c1929),
destroyed by vandals.

Two long wooden ladders allowed access to the
red rock shelf below, where rowing boats
would be pulled up onto the rocks.

When schools of fish, mainly Salmon, were
spotted, the fishermen descended the ladders,
launched the boats and ran a net around the fish.

The fish could be hauled onto the beach
or taken inside the lake, and kept in the
enclosures (fishpens) along the lake edge in the
area known as Fishpen Rd, until market, or
transport conditions would enable a profitable sale.
