The cache is located about 500ft from Dial Carreg, the Revenge Stone, all that remains of a memorial to a murder that took place here in 1135 . At that time the track along the Ffwddog Ridge was a main highway. The murder is said to have been an act of revenge. Richard de Clare who had been staying at Abergavenny castle was travelling with his minstrel to visit his estates further north when he was ambushed. Both were killed in an act of revenge carried out by Morgan ap Owen, the Welsh lord of Caerleon and a band of followers who had laid in wait for the travellers in what was then a wooded hillside.
The track along the ridge was until recently still designated a parish road providing access for over 100 farms and cottages scattered along the hillside and in the Grwyne Fawr valley. Many were still inhabited in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but most were abandoned or destroyed when the Forestry Commission took over the land and are now hidden away in the depths of the forest. The ruinous remains of the Hamlet of Ffwddog, including the Black Cock Inn and the blacksmith’s shop, you will have passed if you walked up from Five Ways. Another pub, The Spiteful Inn was behind the wall near to the Stone of Revenge.
Whichever way you approach this cache, be prepared for an energetic walk of about 2 miles each way. There are several starting points so it’s probably a good idea to work out a circular route back to your car and perhaps search for other caches not too far away.
