Geocache Description:

Traditional Cache located near an ancient Holy well dedicated to the 5th Century hermit Saint Barrahane

Driving directions :
Follow the L4218 road from Castletownshend, after 1.1 miles turn left at the signpost to Castlehaven castle. Follow the road to the end where parking is avalable.

The Cache is located off the path to an ancient Holy well dedicated to the local Saint Barrahane.

After locating the cache, follow the grassy path to the gate at the end of the field. The well is located over a wooden bridge on the banks of a stream a few yards on. Visitors to the well tie ribbons on the branches of an overhanging bush to bring good luck.
Please close all gates following your visit !

On returning to the road the remains of the old O'Driscoll castle (Now covered in Ivy) can be found overlooking the beach. Also here are the ruins of an old Church and Graveyard.

Part of the Battle of Kinsale, which cemented English rule in Ireland was fought here in December 1601

A Naval battle was fought in the Harbour between Spanish and English ships. A number of Spanish ships were sunk but the English were forced to retreat. The resulting stalemate prevented the Spanish relieving their besieged countrymen in nearby Kinsale

Following the subsequent defeat in the Battle of Kinsale one of the Irish earls- Red Hugh O'Donnell left Ireland for Spain from this beach
