Geocache Description:

Whangaehu is a small rural village, 15mins South of Wanganui. It consists largely of a school, a church, a garage a community hall, & a marae. There is beach access at the end of Whangaehu Beach Road, although it's through private land, public are welcome to use it, as long as gates are left as found. Although not the nicest of beaches i.e. lots of driftwood, & fairly rough sea's, it is a place to be during whitebaiting season, & good for fishing.

We have lived here for nearly 5 years now, & felt it was time we put Whangaehu on the geocaching map. Whangaehu- particularly in the lower valley areas, is prone to flooding in heavy rain. A storm in February 2004, followed by a second storm in July, saw the Whangaehu Village under water & had a devastating effect on the area. Residents of the village had to be evacuated, with a number of residents having to be airlifted to safety aboard two Air Force Iroquois helicopters. Much debate followed, with discussions concerning building stop banks to protect the village, moving houses out of the more flood prone areas, & raising houses above flood level. However, little has changed since those floods to our knowledge. The cache is placed at the local community hall. It is not a cache recommended for the faint hearted, or anyone weary of placing their hands into small dark hidey holes!!! I also don't recommend you attempt to find this cache during the hours of 7.15 - 8.00a.m & 3.45 – 4.15p.m during week days, as this is when the school bus stops here to pick up & drop of local children – mine included! Caution will be needed during out of school hours & holidays , as Whangaehu children may be playing near by. There is also a house directly opposite GZ – so watch for muggles there too! I've attempted to get as close as possible with the co – ordinates, but our old GPS isn't always the most accurate. However, it should be close enough to find the cache. Any more accurate co -ords would be appreciated though. Room for small swapables only.
