Ailurophobia, or the irrational fear of cats, seems to be culture dependent. In some societies cats are thought to be witches. Imagine a cat riding a broomstick. Larger cats, such as lions and tigers, are feared for good reason but that's not a phobia. In the U.S, the range of the mountain lion, aka cougar, has been spreading eastward and sightings in Minnesota are not unheard of.
