Geocache Description:

The old bridleway

Please replace as found, cameoed and so away from passing muggle eyes as this is a well used walking route.

The new bypass was opened to traffic in November 2008.

The existing route of the A419 at Blunsdon followed the line of the Roman Road (Ermin Street) through the edge of the village. Traffic congestion occured at Turnpike Roundabout and at the junction with Lady Lane with long delays, particularly at peak times, causing driver frustration and traffic accidents. The A419 in Blunsdon was difficult to cross for pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians and vehicles. The quality of the environment near the trunk road was also poor due to high volumes of vehicles, high noise levels and associated uses of facilities at Turnpike.

This scheme has provided a dual carriageway bypass to the west of Blunsdon. At the southern end, Turnpike Roundabout has been replaced by two signal controlled junctions with a local road connecting them. A new junction at Turnpike and another close to Lady Lane. which is on a new bridge over the bypass. This allows access to Blunsdon and Swindon and allows traffic to flow freely on the A419. Turnpike Junction maintains access to Cricklade Road and Thamesdown Drive. A dedicated pedestrian/cycle way has been provided on the local connecting road. Pedestrian/cycle phases have been incorporated in the signalised Lady Lane Junction.

A new bridleway bridge has been provided at the end of Widhill Lane to allow users to cross the bypass safely. Between the bottom of Blunsdon Hill and Lady Lane Junction, the bypass has a third (climbing) lane. At the northern end of the bypass, an underbridge has been provided to maintain access to the landfill site and Upper Widhill Farm.

The existing dual carriageway was downgraded as part of the scheme. On Blunsdon Hill. In partnership with Swindon Borough Council, environmental improvements have been carried out the between Widhill Lane and Lady Lane which have now become the responsibility of Swindon Borough Council.

From the parking suggestion take the sign posted bridleway. After visiting the cache why not continue on to the new bridge and take in some more caches around the area? After crossing the bypass you can turn right and continue up the old A419 and cross back over to Lady Lane and the parking.
