Uncle Ned's Rock Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

notmuchofalooker: Visited today with the four littl'n's. First stage needs maintenance and second stage is missing. This cache has been up for 5 years and we are moving house soon, so I'm afraid it won't be replaced. Thanks for all of the visits and comments.

Geocache Description:

A two part cache located around and about Uncle Ned's Rock on Open Access land at Bolenowe Carn Moor.

There are several stories as to why the rock obtained its name.

The first story I heard is that Uncle Ned buried his treasure there; another was that there being no formal education establishments Uncle Ned taught primary school aged children from Bolenowe and Troon there in the 19th Century; however my favourite story is that it is said a man named Ned was walking home drunk one night and laid on the rock for a rest and ended up sleeping all night there. Whatever the reason for its local name it certainly seems to have been used as a meeting (or trysting!) place down through the centuries. If you have another explanation please message me.

From Uncle Ned's Rock you can see to St Ives, South Crofty, Carn Brea and beyond.

The co-ordinates above are for Part 1. The co-ordinates for the cache are contained within Part 1. You will need to locate and retrieve the Part 1 container and take it with you to the cache co-ordinates in order to get your hands on the cache (the trickiest part of this cache may actually be replacing the cache afterwards – hint: use the other end!). Once you have signed the log and replaced the cache as you found it please replace Part 1 at the original location.

Beware that although the land is Open Access it is used for the grazing of horses and sheep. There are many ways to access this cache, I usually approach from Troon (go SE from the trailhead and take the middle route of the three way fork). You can also approach from Bolenowe (go SW from the trailhead and take the footpath on the left), either way it is a decent walk. Beware that some of the other footpaths to this area go through agricultural fields.

I have put this in as a 2/2 as I have been up there many a time with my (nearly) 3 year old and 1 and a half year old, but you won't be able to get a buggy up there! (Comments on rating appreciated).

Congratulations to Stompy & Stampy for FTF (again!)
