The Legend of the White Horse Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

Geocache Description:

There are many myths behind the legend of the White Horse. The most documented relates to the tragic disappearance of Lady Williamson in the late eighteen hundreds.

The Disappearance of Lady Williamson..

Legend has it that Lady Williamson and her husband Sir Hedworth Williamson would take a daily ride over the local hills of South Shields.

One tragic day, Sir Hedworth was away and Lady Williamson rode alone on her white mare in the direction of Marsden Rock, which at that time was still part of the mainland.

Lady Williams was never seen again. For many years Sir Hedworth searched in vain for any trace of Lady Williamson and her horse, until Sir Hedworth finally had to give up.

At the same time losing interest in his estate, he gave all of his horses to his ostler, Edwin Wareham (from Dorset) with which he set up the Wareham Cab Company near Westoe, and gave some money to his gamekeeper, Peter Allan who later became tenant of the Marsden Grotto Inn located nearby.

In gratitude to his former employer and to the memory of Lady Williamson the White Horse was scratched and engraved in tar and lime wash by Edwin Wareham as a sign of respect.

The tradition of painting the White Horse and keeping the memory of Lady Williamson alive has been kept up ever since by the local people of South Shields.

Please photograph the white horse as often as possible to keep the legend truly alive.

Fantastic views of South Shields and the surrounding coastline can be found from higher ground. Don't miss this golden opportunity.
I would also definately recommend this for a night cache.

The cache is large enough for swaps and trackables. Please take the time to sign the log book. One pound for the first to find.

Many thanks to South Tyneside Council for allowing me to place this Geocache within this vast nature reserve. Please cache in and trash out.
