Geocache Description:

This two stage multi-cache highlights old remnants of the Yellowstone Trail. Parking for WP1 was once part of the trail, and the first part of the road to the final is probably the most authentic example still remaining.

The route of the Yellowstone Trail followed this road from 1925 to 1930. The "King's Official Route Guide" from 1915 gives us an idea of the driving conditions along this portion of the road at that time. It reported that this road was mostly gravel with little clay. The following is the Zittau portion of the description of the route going west (miles beginning in Oshkosh are on the left), from Sauby Rd. to Triangle Campground:

19.6 Turn left (from Sauby Road)

19.8 Curve right

19.9 Curve right (Breckins Loop Road- another remnant)

20.2 Pass creamery on left

20.3 Curve left

21.7 Cross three iron bridges and cross iron bridge over creek (Rat River)

21.8 Keep to the left

22.2 Curve right, then left through

23.1 Zittau; go straight ahead

23.2 Pass saloon on left

23.2 Pass cheese factory on right go to end of road (WP1 parking is at about mile 23.7)

23.8 Turn right

This is how people traveled back in the early years of the automobile. No freeways and no Tom Toms. Just bad roads and bad instructions and maybe a yellow rock with an arrow painted on it.

This cache is doable without tools but it would be much more difficult.

High boots will be useful at certain times of the year.

Both WPs are on public hunting land so you might want to avoid this one during hunting season.
