The Wanganui - East - Connection (Wanganui) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RachelsRiffRaff: Time to retire this one. It's been muggled several times and has gone again. With the rise in traffic numbers the location is also getting dangerous. So it's time for this one to go.

Parking:
Safe parking in Wikitoria Rd at these co-ords: S39°56.939 E175°03.042. If coming from PN, take a left at the roundabout. If coming from Wangavegas, Wikitoria is straight ahead. If coming from New Plymouth, Wikitoria is to the right. A short 5 minute walk will take you to the bridge. Quicker (but not as safe parking) can be had on the PN end of the bridge, on the town side (exit from the left lane as you are leaving the city and going towards Palmerston North.) It is in an 80km zone, so extreme caution is advised.

once on the walkway, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CROSS THE ROAD AT ANY STAGE

Activity:
Not a high muggle area but watch for the odd pedestrian and cyclist.
Motorists of course are going by too fast!

Dog Friendly:
Nope. Because of the traffic, the Dog should stay in the car

Stroller Friendly:
Yes

Wheelchair Friendly:
Yes

Kids:
Due to the high speed of passing traffic, keep a good eye on them, and a firm hand on any 'runners'

Walkway History
The new clip-on cycle and pedestrian lane on the Cobham Bridge was officially opened on Saturday, September 28 by Wanganui Mayor Chas Poynter and Transit New Zealand CEO Dr Robin Dunlop.

The incentive for this addition was due to the deaths of two teenage boys, Zane Cutter and Colin Morgan who were killed (by a drunk driver) while riding their bikes across the bridge.

The clip-on was constructed following a local petition that put pressure on Transit New Zealand.

A plaque is embedded in the clip-on on the coastal side of the bridge.

Also on the coastal side of the bridge, is Corliss Island, home of ‘Stranded’, one of our favourite caches.

[Any comments or more accurate co-ords to improve this listing most welcome. Cheers]
