Geocache Description:

The published coordinates will take you to Lock Bridge. This was built using stone from a lock, which formed part of the attempt in the 18th century to make the Cod Beck navigable. The cache is within 500 metres of the published coordinates.

The cache is located at N 54° 13.ABC W 001° 20.DEF

A = 14th plus 16th
B = 9th minus 12th
C = 13th plus 3rd
D = 6th minus 11th plus 17th
E = 5th plus 15th minus 2nd
F = 10th minus 8th plus 7th

In 1763 an Act of Parliament was obtained for making the Cod Beck navigable from its junction with the River Swale, near Topcliffe, to Thirsk. Work began at the Thirsk end in 1768. A basin was constructed for the vessels and a wharf built for the landing of goods; a lock was erected at Sowerby, the river deepened and its course straightened from the wharf to the lock. But funds for the scheme failed and the canal was never completed. A newspaper (the York Courant) of 10 July 1770 reported that two new 40-ton vessels had reached York from Thirsk - the first, and probably the last, cargo-carrying craft to make the journey.
