Trouble At Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hotel3: Went for a walk and decided to do a spot of maintainance on this one, thought it was time for a new log book and its gone.
Nope, zip, nada, nowt there.

These types of cache have been banned by Groundpeak now anyway, and though the old ones have been grandfathered in it seems a prudent time to archive this one.

I also cache now under the family banner so rarely use this account.

I would like to thank everyone who has visited this cache over the last 12 months, Im not sure if I will set another one up near here, given the proximity to "Snookered" http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC2564R but there are a few in Lostock Hall. The cache pages remains for archiving and reference with its history included. And thank you to all the kind people from the NW Caching forum who gave me help in my first days of getting to grips with the GPSr.

Enjoy,cache safely & Goodbye.

Hotel3.

Geocache Description:

A nano cache disguised for urban placement. It might even be mistaken for a piece of rubbish at first glance (but that doesnt mean to say the cache is rubbish!)
Parking is available on road, though be careful as it’s often quite busy and traffic doesn’t always obey the 20 MPH limit.
The Cache is overlooked by both the mill and by some houses across the road, a degree of stealth is needed. You will need a pen or pencil to log your visit.

Though the “Snookered” cache is close by, it isn’t a physical cache unlike this one, so this does meet the guidelines for caches placed within close range of each other.

Your visit here places you facing Tardy Gate Manufacturing Company Limited (what a mouthful!) Construction of the red Accrington brick portion of the mill with its wonderful façade and engine house began in 1908 and was completed in 1912 – sadly the original three partners lost all their money in the venture and “blew their brains out” as a means of avoiding the shame, how times have changed.

The mill was bought out by the Thomas Moss Company in 1920 and it was they who expanded the building to include the white rendered sheds visible to the left of the original structure.

The mill continued to operate until early 1981 when it closed and the building was then sold to a company producing animal feeds before being taken over by the Todd family who changed from a running a garden centre to selling trailer tents and later motor homes. Like many former mills the structure has undergone changes in keeping with its new use – sadly the Crittall windows have long gone with many openings now bricked up, and what few remain replaced with uPVC items.

The former steam engine house is now home to a garage and the high chimney with its distinctive green band round the top was given a reprieve from demolition due to its deteriorating condition when a mobile phone company rented its space for the installation of a new transmitter in 1997. Sadly it lost its magnificent gold crown made out of the same stone as the name on the mill façade.

You are looking for a disguised nano which would be at home in the detritus of a street. The cache is placed on a little patch of ground just off a footpath, there is NO NEED to enter the mill property or climb over the wall.
Good, bad or indifferent? Let me know in your log.

Good Luck and thank you for visiting the Mill at Tardy Gate.
